eHarmony launched in the UK in July 2008 as an alternative to online dating for singles looking for a long-term relationship. The company started out in the USA in 2000, where it has grown into the country’s most trusted relationship website. Additionally, eHarmony is responsible for nearly 4% of new U.S. marriages*. eHarmony is also available in Canada, Australia and Brazil, and looking to expand further.
The eHarmony concept was developed by clinical psychologist Dr. Neil Clark Warren. After practicing for 35 years, counseling hundreds of married couples, Dr. Warren began to think there must be a better way for people to be matched up. He noted that the marriages that didn’t endure were those where couples had large differences, and set about defining the traits that led to a successful match.
In 1997, along with Dr. Galen Buckwalter, a research Professor at the University of Southern California, Dr. Warren worked on identifying the personality characteristics of successful relationships. After three years they of research they worked out the formula for a successful long-term relationship. This research forms the basis of eHarmony’s Compatibility Matching System, that matches couples successfully every day.
This rigorous, scientific approach to relationships is still going strong today in the eHarmony Labs. The lab works to ensure the matching system is up-to-date and geographically relevant in all the countries where eHarmony is available. Though now not actively involved in the day-to-day running of eHarmony, Dr. Warren is the Chairman of the Board of Directors, and Dr. Buckwalter is a key member of the Scientific Advisory Board.
eHarmony in the United Kingdom
Before launching eHarmony in the United Kingdom in 2008, the company adopted the same processes of scientific rigour that have served it so well in the United States. In 2007, under the direction of Dr. Buckwalter, eHarmony partnered with researchers at the Oxford Internet Institute at the University of Oxford. A multi-disciplinary research team gathered data from approximately 1,000 married couples, selected to be representative of married couples throughout the United Kingdom. These couples ranged in age from 19 to 81 and had been married from under 1 year to over 65 years. eHarmony researchers analysed the data to identify the patterns that predict compatibility for couples throughout the United Kingdom. While research shows there are many aspects unique to relationships in the United Kingdom, it is interesting to note that there are also similarities in what determines successful relationships in both the United Kingdom and the United States.
After conducting the research, eHarmony developed models of compatibility specific to the United Kingdom resident population and is proud to offer you the opportunity to use its highly successful service. If you are looking for relationship success, we invite you to try eHarmony.
eHarmony is rated as the No. 1 UK dating site on The UK Online Dating Review, an independent review of the best dating sites in the UK.
